Hermann

On
the Sensations of Tone
Dover
Publications - (December 1954) |
Reference
Book
An
historical book, in which the famous German Physicist states the
foundations of the Acoustics and the today called Psychoacoustics. Here
you can find the (today refused) Helmholtz's theory of timbre, based on
the harmonic composition of steady-state sounds. Readings of original
papers and book of historic Authors, rather than the often disfigured
following referrals, are always instructive and charming. This is a very
cheap Dover Paperback.

Aspects
of Tone Sensation: A Psychophysical Study
|
Reference
Book
Another
historical book. Plomp was the first who stated quantitatively the
behaviour of the sensation of roughness, which is the psychoacoustical
basis of the dissonance. The function in the critical band
dominion which describes the trend of that sensation takes its
names from Plomp. Unfortunately, this book is currently out of print.

Spatial
Hearing : The Psychophysics of Human Sound Localization
MIT
Press - (June 1997) |
Reference
Book
Blauert
is the man who first discovered that the perception of a sound as coming
from the top or from the rear depends on specific filtering of the
incoming sound made by the head. This was the starting point for the
investigation on the HRTF (Head Related Transfer Functions), which give
to our brain further cues (other than intensity and precedence effect)
about the direction of incoming sounds. This book covers the
fundamentals of our perception of auditory space, and is written by an
authoritative scholar in the field.
